When staff don’t have a planning framework, activities tend to get built the same way: pull something from memory, figure it out as they go, and hope it holds together. This training introduces a simple, flexible planning framework that makes programs more intentional, more consistent, and more recoverable when something goes wrong. Staff leave with a completed activity plan ready to use with their group before the summer starts.
THE PROBLEM
Planning an activity and planning it well are two different things. This training focuses on the second one.
The gap between an activity that lands and one that doesn’t is often visible before the activity starts. Staff who have thought through each stage of a program, from how they’ll hook the group to how they’ll close it, run more consistent programs and recover faster when something goes sideways. Without a framework, that thinking tends not to happen until something has already gone wrong.

The Natural Cycles Model
A six-stage planning framework, Inspiration, Orientation, Perspiration, Relaxation, Celebration, Reflection, that scales from a single activity to an entire summer. Staff learn the model in the first part of the session and use it for everything that follows.
A shared planning language for the whole staff team
When Things Go Wrong
Use the Natural Cycles model to diagnose and fix activities in the moment rather than after the fact. Staff practice identifying where in the cycle a program broke down and what to do about it.
A real-time troubleshooting tool
Plan It Before You Run It
Staff use the framework to draft a real activity plan they can bring back to their group. The goal is a complete, specific plan ready to run, not a blank template to fill in later.
