Routine Magic
Strategies that actually work — adapted for the camp environment.
At a Glance
Teachers have spent decades developing tools for managing groups of kids in chaotic, high-need environments. Camp staff face the same challenges with far less training. This session takes the best of what classroom teachers know and adapts it for the realities of camp, giving frontline staff a practical, immediately usable toolkit for managing behavior before it becomes a crisis.
The Problem
Camp Isn't a
Classroom.
But It Can
Feel Like One.
Most behavior management training is designed for teachers with desks, fixed schedules, and a clear authority structure. Camp blows all of that up. You've got mixed ages, outdoor settings, rotating activities, and staff who are barely older than the kids they're managing.
The result? Reactive consequences, inconsistent follow-through, and staff who feel powerless the moment a group gets chaotic. This training borrows the best tools from the classroom and adapts them for the camp environment, practical, fast, and built for the real conditions your staff are actually working in.
Most behavior incidents at camp happen because staff didn't have a plan before things went sideways.
This training gives them one.
WHAT’S INSIDE
4 Core Modules
The Ladder of Action
Six de-escalation moves, from a quiet look to a last resort. The Ladder gives staff a pre-planned sequence so they're never reaching for a response in the heat of the moment. They start quiet, stay in control, and only escalate when the situation truly calls for it.
Staff leave with a management skills they can use immediately
Giving Clear Instructions
Imprecise directions create the behavioral challenges we then spend time managing. This module teaches the four essential elements of effective instruction-giving, specific, observable, concrete, and sequential, with hands-on practice using real camp scenarios.
The most immediately usable skill in the training
Strong Voice
Stop moving. Use fewer words. Never compete for attention and win it every time. Strong Voice is a set of physical and verbal techniques borrowed from elite classroom teachers. Staff learn to project calm authority without yelling, threatening, or pleading.
Participants practice and get real-time feedback
Giving Clear Instructions
Build routines so smooth your group runs them without you. This module introduces a 6-part framework for designing routines that eliminate chaotic moments before they start and create shared ownership in your cabin or group.
Participants draft real routines to bring back to their groups

CITS
This training is designed for frontline and line staff — the people working directly with campers every day. Accessible enough for first-year staff and immediately valuable for veterans who've been doing this for years but have never had formal training.
Leadership staff often sit in on this session to develop a shared language with their teams. For something designed specifically for supervisors and directors, check out Coaching as a System or Beyond Sticker Charts.
Works for camps of any size, setting, or population. The tools adapt. The fundamentals are universal.
