The Consequences Playbook

Pre-planned consequences that teach something.

At a Glance

Reactive consequences, the ones staff come up with on the spot, tend to be punitive by default. They stop the behavior in the moment and don’t do much beyond that. This training shifts staff from reactive to prepared, giving them a framework for building consequences that are logical, incremental, and connected to the behavior they’re addressing. Staff leave with a personalized consequence bank of 10–15 pre-planned responses ready to use from day one.

The Problem

Punitive consequences are easy to reach for. Logical ones take preparation.

This training is the preparation.

Consequences given in the heat of the moment tend to be punitive by default. Without a framework and a pre-built set of options, staff default to removal, loss of privilege, or the consequence that matched their frustration level rather than the behavior.

This training gives staff the framework and the options before they need them.

WHAT’S INSIDE

4 Core Modules

Why Consequences Break Down

A look at the three types of misbehavior, incompetence, opportunism, and defiance, and why treating all three the same way produces worse outcomes for each. Understanding what’s driving the behavior changes what the right response is.

A new lens for reading what a behavior is communicating.

The Four Types of Consequences

Logical, natural, restorative, and punitive. Staff learn what each one is, when it applies, and why punitive consequences, the default for people under pressure, tend to address the moment without addressing the behavior.

A clear framework for choosing the right kind of consequence.

The 6 Principles

Logical, incremental, consistent, quick, private, warm and firm. Each principle has a specific rationale and a specific payoff. Staff learn to evaluate their own consequences against these six criteria before summer starts.

A self-check staff can use to evaluate any consequence they’re considering

Building the Playbook

Staff pre-plan 10–15 specific consequences for the behaviors they’re most likely to face, using the consequence bank format. Knowing the principles is useful. Having the playbook ready is what changes behavior management on the ground.
