Say What You Mean: Licensed Camp Staff Training on the Art of Clear Instructions
Licensed training bundle. 75-minute camp staff session on giving clearer instructions to prevent behavior problems before they start. Editable deck, lesson plan, speaker notes, participant handouts, and license terms. Single-site, in perpetuity.
────────────
Most behavior problems at camp aren't behavior problems. They're instruction problems.
The kid who wandered off didn't ignore you. You said "get ready for lunch" and they pictured something different than you did. The cabin that didn't clean up didn't defy you. You said "clean the cabin" without telling them what clean meant. The line that fell apart didn't disrespect you. You said "line up" without saying where, how, or who goes first.
Camp staff arrive at staff week assuming the kids will know what they mean. The kids don't. And when staff get frustrated that campers aren't following directions, they reach for behavior management tools to fix what was actually a clarity problem.
This training closes the gap.
In 75 minutes, your team will:
Feel the clarity gap themselves through three live exercises that show how unclear "obvious" instructions actually are
Learn the 5 Principles of Clear Instructions: Get Attention First, Tell Them What to Do (Not What to Stop), Be Specific and Concrete, Chunk It, and Check for Understanding
Use the Effectiveness Checklist to grade any instruction against all five principles
Critique two real camp scenarios together, then write and practice their own instructions with peer feedback
Walk away with a tool they can use before the next transition, the next activity, the next time they need a group to listen
By the end, your staff has a shared vocabulary for what makes an instruction work, a checklist they can use to grade their own delivery, and the practiced confidence to give the same instruction twenty times this summer without it landing any worse the twentieth time than the first.
This is a Tier 1 training. It prevents the behaviors that other trainings teach you to manage.
